The Minimum Wages Act, 1948

The minimum wages Act, 1948 is implemented through Commissioner of Labour in the State of Gujarat. It provides for fixing minimum rates of wages in certain employments which are included in the schedule. It extends to the whole of India. The Act applies to the schedule employments for which minimum wages are fixed/ revised. Basic wage and variable DA shall be fixed based on consumer price index. It can be minimum price rate or time rate.

The Government of Gujarat has fixed minimum rates of wages in respect of 50 Schedule Employment for industrial workers.

Fixation of minimum wages and their revision is done from time to time with a view to protect the real income and also to raise the eventually to achieve the objective of ensuring a need based minimum wages to every one is one of the basic elements of the wage policy of the Government.

Provision for Special Allowance has also been made by the Government of Gujarat. The rate of special allowance is adjusted on the basis of average of the living Index Number for preceding period of six months ending on 30th June and 31st December.

Every rise of 5 points in the cost of living index number leads to a rise of 0.20 paisa per day in the special allowance.

At present the Average Rate of Minimum Wage for Un-Skilled labour is Rs.100.90, for Semi-skilled Rs. 101-70 and Skilled labour Rs. 102.50
