| |  |  |  | | | | | HomeHOD | | HOD Note | | Workers are the backbone of industrial development as well as key stack holders for the development of nation. They must be properly cared by the government and employers. The department of Director Industrial Safety and Health always plays a vital role in maintaining safety, health and welfare of industrial as well as construction workers.
To meet the challenges arising out of rapid industrial growth, the department is getting equipped with modern technology for safety of workers and public residing in the vicinity of industrial hazards area. Gujarat has achieved 40% rise in number of registered factories and 37% rise in employment therein in last decade.
Prevention of accidents is a prime function of the department. Comparing the figures of last three years with previous three years, it is noticed that there is a decrease of 12.2% in fatal and 46.5% in non-fatal accidents.
Vigorous inspections and follow-up actions by the officers, enhanced status of safety have been achieved. On-site emergency plan of all Major Accident Hazard units and off-site emergency plans of districts of the State have been prepared. They are rehearsed and updated as a part of preparedness to combat industrial major accidents like fire, explosion, toxic release etc. The State has initiated updating of G.I. based emergency planning & preparedness for the six districts with the help of MoEF.
Implementation of labour laws is carried out by motivation, persuasion and prosecution if required.
A State level safety conference is organized every year in association with Gujarat Safety Council, Vadodara, as well as district and region level safety seminars are being organized in association with National Safety Council – Gujarat Chapter to create safety awareness among all stakeholders.
NGOs are given Grant-in-aid to run safety awareness programmes for workers. Safety is publicized through displaying big sized hoardings at prominent places of industrial zones. 19 days state level Disaster Management Campaign was arranged in 2005 on PPP basis in which 16545 participants took part. Year 2008 was celebrated as year of Industrial Safety and Health. Awareness programmes and safety competitions were organized by the department. The department officers as well as medium & large scale industries continuously arrange safety programme throughout the year for capacity building of the workers. | | | | | | | | |
