With the rapid industrialization
various types of industries developed in the state, along
with this there was spurt in chemical industries and at present,
state has highest numbers of chemical industries in the country.
Considering the hazards
connected with various chemical industries, Gujarat State
Directorate, Ind. Safety and Health was first in the country to carry out
chemical survey and categorizing the chemical industries depending
upon the hazard .
Industrial Hygiene Laboratory was established
in 1982 to monitor health conditions of workers employed in
various chemical and other industries porn to health hazard
.
A medical survey of workers
was undertaken with the help of NIOH & E.S.I.S. wherein
more than 18,000 workers were medically examined in year 1996.
More-over worker employed
in Textile, Quartz-crushing, Diamond, Asbestos and Agate industries were also
medically examined to ascertain if any of workers have contacted
by occupational diseases related with these type of industries.
To minimize the ill effects
of silica dust and cotton dust in Quarts crashing Agate Industries
and Textile Industries a specialized dust control system have
been developed and introduced.
To create awareness about
safety, 26 state level conferences have been conducted in collaboration
with Gujarat Safety Council.
Besides, safety programs
are also conducted in various industries and in different
industrial areas. Such programmes are also undertaken on 4th
March every year as a part of National Safety week celebration.
State has a Scheme of 16
"State Shram awards" being the first of its kind,
awarded every year to industrial workers to promote safety
and industrial relations.
Under CHEMICAL ACCIDENTS
(EMERGENCY PLANNING, PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE ) RULES 1996
, 45 Local Crisis Group, 25 District Crisis Group and the
State Crisis group have been formed to control, minimize and
mitigate adverse effects in the event of any industrial disasters.
Mock drills are regularly
conducted to create awareness amongst the workers and public
at large.
In spite of increase
in number of factories, there has been considerable decrease
in industrial accidents (During 2001-05 compared to previous five years registered factories increased by 14.23%, MAH Factories by 70% where as fatal accidents and non. fatal accidents are decreased by 27% and 33% respectively) due to effective enforcement of safety provisions
by the Directorate, Ind. Safety and Health. (See
